What We Believe

In simple terms…

Simplicity is a key characteristic of The Pasture.  We believe that a lot of what’s confusing and unappealing about church is how over-complicated and systematized it can become.  It is not our intent to water down the scriptures in an attempt to make things appealing to a broader range of people.  Appeal is not the goal, but rather the ability to practically apply the things we believe.  We intend to keep this as simple as possible.  On major points of faith, practice and doctrine we take a firm and unified stance.  We believe you’ll know where The Pasture stands in these areas after reading the statement below.  On the minors - the things where we may tend more often to differ, we give and receive grace.

We believe in the only true God existing in three equal but distinct persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.  God is the creator and sustainer of all.  He is perfect and holy in His person and ways, and is worthy of our exclusive worship and praise.

We believe Jesus Christ to be fully God and fully man, a fleshly manifestation of God, virgin born and completely without sin.  His primary mission was the laying down of his life as payment for the sins of mankind.  By his death, burial and resurrection, the power of sin and death is utterly defeated and eternal, personal relationship with God is possible through repentance and faith.

We believe in the Holy Spirit; that he dwells within those who believe, guiding, instructing, filling, comforting, and empowering them for kingdom living.  We believe that he convicts the world of sin and of God’s righteousness and coming judgement.  We believe that he works as powerfully and supernaturally today as he ever has, gifting believers in a variety of ways for the edification of the church and the magnification of Jesus Christ and his redemptive work.

We believe that Satan is real, a spirit being fallen from heaven who tempts believers, incites evil, and deceives the world in a futile effort to supplant God’s Kingdom.  His defeat was secured at the cross and he is doomed with his angels to the eternal flames of the lake of fire.  We resist him as believers by the power of the Holy Spirit who indwells us.

We believe that man was created by God in innocence and in the image of God.  Willful disobedience robbed him of his innocence and sinlessness and subjected him to death, both physically and spiritually. As a result, all mankind is born in a sinful state, separated from God by his sin and in desperate need of a Savior.

We believe that Jesus was raised from the dead on the third day after his crucifixion.  This is important because in doing so, death and the grave are eternally defeated.  We believe that after his resurrection, Jesus ascended into heaven where he advocates on our behalf as High Priest.

We believe that because of the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus, salvation from sin and restoration of fellowship with God is made possible through repentance and faith.  We believe that the life of Jesus, willingly laid down for us, is the only sufficient satisfaction of the wrath that God pours out against sin.

We believe that baptism of the believer by immersion is a step of joyful obedience that glorifies our Savior and identifies us publicly with the saving work that he wrought through his death, burial and resurrection.

We believe that the regular remembrance of the saving sacrifice of Jesus through communion is important as a church.  We regularly participate together as believers in the Lord’s Supper utilizing bread and juice as representations of the body of Christ broken for us and the blood of Christ shed for us.

We believe that the Scriptures of the Old Testament and New Testament are verbally inspired by God and that they are without error in their original writings. We believe that the 66 books of the Old Testament and the New Testament are God's complete and sufficient revelation and that they carry God's authority for the total well-being of mankind.

We believe that Jesus is coming again and that when he does, both saved and lost will be raised to eternal life or eternal torment depending on whether they have accepted Jesus and his saving work by faith, or rejected Jesus and the free gift of salvation.  We believe that heaven and Hell are literal places, Heaven a place of eternal joy and Hell a place of eternal torment and separation from God and his love.
